CORTLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A former Fort Drum soldier who escaped from military custody and caused a three day manhunt in September, has been sentenced to one to three years in prison.

Russell Marcum was sentenced in Cortland County Court on Thursday for burglary and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. The charges stem from a manhunt that stretched from Watertown to Tompkins County.

He has already faced charges in a number of other counties and his sentence in Cortland will run concurrent with the other sentences, all for similar crimes.

Marcum also received credit for time he has already served in county lock up.

"This is a tragedy. It's a young man serving in our military went haywire, and he's paying a high price. Upon my information he had no prior criminal conduct. I respect the service he rendered to this country while he was in the military," said Mark Suben, District Attorney of Cortland County.

In court on Thursday, Marcum apologized for his actions.
