Another chapter in the story of Jiverly Wong began Monday, right here in the News 10 Now Syracuse newsroom. It began with an envelope addressed to the station. Inside, a letter from the shooter. News 10 Now's Joleene Des Rosiers has more on this turn of events.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- So many questions What was in this letter? And is it authentic? Is it really from Jiverly Wong?That will ultimately be up to police to decide.
But keep this in mind, sent with the letter was a driver's license, a pistol permit and photos of Wong with two pistols. And they certainly appear to be the real thing.
What began as a normal day in our newsroom took a sharp turn when this arrived. A letter, photographs of Wong with weapons, what appears to be his driver’s license and his pistol permit. It arrived in a standard, white envelope. It's postmarked, from Binghamton, April 3rd. Friday. The day of the shooting. But the letter itself is dated March 18th. It's arrival staggered our news director Ron Lombard, to say the least."Honestly, a moment of panic! I've been in this business for about 30 years now, I've never experienced something quite like that. I think realizing what we apparently have in our hands was kind of scary, actually, in understanding the gravity of it as I started reading the letter, it appears to contain some of his personal history and it amounts to his reasoning of why he was going to carry out the attack," said Ron Lombard, News 10 Now General Manager and News Director.
An attack that took the lives of 13...14 including Jiverly Wong, as police say he turned one of his weapons on himself.
Law enforcement, of course, was contacted and arrived to take the contents and the letter. A letter neatly written in broken English, claiming the shootings were the result of years of harassment from law enforcement. A letter that Lombard feels should be shared with all that are watching, and have been watching, this tragic story unfold.
"We feel there is compelling, public interest in this. It begins to answer the questions, assuming everything is authentic, it appears to answer the questions of motive which is a big, unanswered question," Lombard said.
Police will, of course, work to determine the authenticity of the materials.
