ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The superintendent of Elmira City Schools will soon be moving on.

Joseph Hochreiter is expected to be hired as the new head of the Hendrick Hudson School District in Westchester County, taking over July 1st.

Hochreiter had led the Elmira district since 2009 and served as deputy superintendent before that.

The Elmira school board president says the announcement doesn't come as a huge shock. This was his first superintendent job and they understood he would want to move on at some point.

"He was definitely forthcoming to the board. The board knew that he was interviewing at other districts. So it came as no surprise to the board. We understand where he's at in his career and that he was interviewing with other districts," said Elmira School Board President Sara Lattin.

The school board now has to turn its attention to finding a replacement. Lattin says they plan to take their time in the process and will be meeting to discuss how to move forward.
