Syracuse police are investigating an early morning homicide. It happened on South Salina Street and investigators have released new details about what happened. Iris St. Meran has more.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse Police say the teenager who was shot and killed early Tuesday morning appears to have been targeted.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. at the intersection of South Salina Street and Calthrop Street.

Police say three people were sitting in a stopped car when a red vehicle pulled up. That's when someone started firing shots from the passenger side. Makliek Starling, 18, was hit. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

As of right now, investigators are unsure if he or someone else was the shooter's intended target.

"Any time we get a shooting like this, it appears to us that whoever was in that vehicle, whether it be the victim or any of the other two people in the car, could have possibly been targeted for this shooting. This does not appear to be a random shooting by any means,” Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse Police Department.

The shooting marks Syracuse's third homicide this year, two of which involved a teenage victim.
