SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Despite the snow on the ground, dozens of golfers hit the course in Syracuse.

There weren’t any golf balls or clubs. They were playing disc golf at Thornden Park in the Ice Bowl Saturday. The rules are the same as golf, just with a flying disc in place of the traditional tools of the game. It's one of many winter tournaments going on around the country this time of year.

In addition to offering some fun in the snow, the event also supports the local Salvation Army, which can always use more help.

Salvation Army’s Greg Meitus said, "Over 90,000 meals were served last year through the Salvation Army's food pantry, and we get through about 1,000 people every month. The need is there. So, it's great when organizations can step up and support the people who need the food."

In its first year last year, the event raised about $800 and 150 pounds of food for the Salvation Army.
