ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Onondaga County Legislature is working to reduce the wait time for pistol permit applications. County Legislator Kevin Holmquist says there's currently a 14-month wait just to get an appointment for a pistol permit in Onondaga County.

Holmquist discussed his ideas at a committee meeting with the Sheriff's Office to decrease that wait time to two months. He says they will still be doing thorough background checks on every applicant, but the people affected most by this wait time are law-abiding citizens.

Holmquist says it is taking so long right now because there are more than 700 applications for pistol permits.

"Because of the actions that have been taken by the federal government and the state government, there's a huge influx of pistol permits. I would expect that would continue. There's going to be a lot more people applying for pistol permits. So in Onondaga County, we want to provide great service and get those permits processed efficiently," he explained.

Holmquist says a new computer system and reallocation of resources will help decrease the wait time.
