SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It was an emotional and happy day for dozens of new U.S. citizens.

More than 50 people were sworn in as citizens of the United States during a naturalization ceremony in Syracuse Thursday afternoon. The ceremony began with the judge welcoming the candidates and ended with handing out what is perhaps the most important certificate of the new citizens' lives.

"I came here when I was five and my mom's always wanted me to be a citizen. I haven't been able to be one now until I'm 18. So it was a big moment for my mom," said Kevin Hernandez.

The 57 candidates came from 25 different countries.
