BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Senator Charles Schumer was in Binghamton on Thursday to meet with top Economic Development Administration officials about funding needed for the high-tech incubator.

The $22 million project is a partnership between Binghamton University, Broome County and the Industrial Development Agency.

Schumer already pushed to get $91 million in a state grant for Broome County, but only $7 million will be used for the 40,000 square foot business incubator. He brought the EDA up from Philadelphia to see and hear first-hand how the incubator would bring hundreds of high-tech jobs to the region and keep them here rather than seeing them go overseas.

"And if the research is done right around the corner at B-U, the likely-hood is the jobs will stay here. If the incubator is the place where they start creating those jobs, it's certainly stay here," said Sen. Schumer.

If Broome County can get the funding from the federal agency as planned, and construction finishes on time, new businesses could begin using the incubator in about two and a half years.
