SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The spread of the flu in Central New York has caused concern among students and college officials, but thanks to Governor Andrew Cuomo's State of Emergency declaration, campuses are able to offer more methods of prevention.

Syracuse University's Director of Health Services says the department saw many flu cases near the end of November. He said they supplied 20 to 30 vaccines to students each day between September and December. He says now, thanks to the declaration, they've been able to give nearly 400 shots over the last few days.

The director also adds that through campus campaigns and a little parental encouragement, more students are being proactive about getting the shot.

"The Governor's declaration got parents to tell their students to get the flu shot if they have not had it yet, which is obviously the most important thing to do to prevent it. And obviously the second thing is just frequent hand washing," said Benjamin Domingo, Director of Health Services at Syracuse University.

Domingo says that teachers are usually willing to work with flu stricken students who are advised to stay home and that academic accommodations are made for some cases.
