ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A second case of whooping cough has been confirmed in Onondaga County. Earlier this month, a case of the disease was confirmed at Marcellus High School, and now a student at Driver Middle School has it.

Pertussis is a contagious disease that often starts with symptoms of a cold, then gets much worse after a week or two weeks. People with whooping cough get a bad cough, sometimes followed by a whooping noise.

Most kids have already received an immunization against pertussis, but that doesn't mean your child can't get it.

The school district suggests anyone who thinks they may have been in contact with someone with whooping cough go to their family doctor as a precaution.
