WEBSTER, N.Y. -- More details have been released on Monday’s deadly attack on firefighters and police in a Rochester suburb.

Webster Police say that human remains have been found in the home of William Spengler, 62, the man they say opened fire on first responders Monday killing two firefighters and wounding two others and a police officer.

Authorities believe they are the remains of Spengler's sister, Cheryl, who lived with him.

Police say Spengler set fire to his home in order to ambush first responders, then engaged in a gun battle with officers. He later killed himself, according to the medical examiner's office.

Police are also saying Spengler was heavily armed in Monday’s attack.

"He had armed himself with three different weapons and an arsenal of ammunition. He had armed himself with a Smith and Wesson .38-caliber revolver, a Mossberg .12 gauge pump shotgun and a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle with a flash suppressor. The investigation on the lineage of the weapons is continuing. My investigators are working with the ATF, the Sheriff's investigators and the State Police criminal investigators," said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.

The fire destroyed seven homes in the community.
