Group calls on Senate to pass Fair Elections Act

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A recent report from the Campaign Finance Institute shows that big donors dominated the 2012 state elections. Now, some leaders in Broome County are urging the senate to pass the Fair Elections Act of 2012.
The bill was introduced by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and sponsored by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo. It outlines what needs to be done to achieve fair elections in New York.
Some of the things the bill calls for are lower contribution limits for people and corporations and matching for donations under $250. Another component of the bill that proponents are calling revolutionary is a requirement that 50 percent of the campaign money come from the candidate's district. They say these things would change the entire political structure in the state.
"It's fair. It evens the playing field. It makes people want to run for public because they feel like they voice can finally be heard,” said Lupardo.
"I would ask that the governor push very hard. He says he wants New York State to be the progressive capital of the country again. This is one issue that we can set a standard," said Mayor Ryan.
The Campaign Finance Institute report says that this type of system would cost New Yorkers about $2 a year.
