JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Traffic was moving at full speed Thursday on the new highway connecting Interstate 81 to the Main Gate at Fort Drum in Jefferson County.

The four-and-a-half mile stretch of Interstate 781 took over two years and almost $60 million to construct.

Thursday was the first day traffic was allowed on the road.

A ceremony will be held in the near future by the state DOT to officially open the highway. It has been named the Paul Cerjan Memorial Highway after the Central New York native who did the planning and oversaw the construction of the new Fort Drum in the 1980s.
