KIRKWOOD, N.Y. -- A ticket has been issued after a fiery crash along Interstate 81 in Broome County Tuesday morning.

Sheriff's deputies say three tractor trailers got tangled up. It all happened just after 5:30 a.m. between exits 3 and 4.

Investigators say it appears as though a frozen food truck crashed into a car carrier, knocking one of the cars off the carrier. Both of those trucks burst into flames.

A truck carrying steel was also involved, but did not catch on fire.

Deputies say quick action probably saved the drivers' lives.

"There was a small fire that had started between the frozen foods truck and the, as well as the motor carrier, and everybody was able to self extricate and get away from the vehicles before they became fully involved," said Captain Frederick Akshar of the Broome County Sheriff’s office.

Driver Andrew High from Ontario, Canada was taken to Wilson Hospital, but is expected to be okay. High was ticketed for following too closely.

Deputies say more charges are pending in the case.
