ALBANY, N.Y. -- The hydrofracking debate heated up as Southern Tier leaders spoke out in Albany.

The health impact study is the next major hurdle before a decision is issued on the controversial natural gas drilling technique. Lawmakers called on Governor Cuomo to change the Department of Health study.

Leaders want an immediate public notice regarding the intent and scope of the 30 day review. The group is also calling for a minimum 30 day public review and comment period for all interested parties and leaders want the Governor to hold at least one public hearing with the health commissioner and the three outside experts looking at the issue.

"It's just insane and surreal that these professionals whom have been contracted for 25 hours each, that's what the contract says, aren't going to listen to the public, aren't going to listen to the experts, aren't going to see face to face debate, under the proposed path forward," said Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan.

Opponents say chemicals used in hydrofracking could damage the environment.

Supporters say natural gas drilling could bring money and jobs to the cash-strapped region.
