ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- If you have had the flu this year, you're not alone. The number of cases is up around the region. As of last week, the Onondaga County Health Department has identified 196 cases. This time last year there were none.

There have been 301 confirmed cases in Jefferson County since mid-October. And in Oneida County, cases have quadrupled to 474.

Health officials say the flu is unpredictable year to year and there's no real explanation for the uptick. But if you do get sick, staying home is the best line of defense.

Onondaga County Health Department Program Coordinator Kathy Mogle said, "Don't go to places where there's a lot of people. Whether it's work, whether it's school, whether it's the mall or a faith based location. Stay home until you're feeling better. Try to stay away from people. Personal hand hygiene is very important."

Flu season can last until May. If you haven't gotten a shot you still can check with your health care provider or pharmacy.
