Authorities on the lookout for potentially rabid fox

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A man and a woman were bitten by a fox in Tioga County. Officials say it happened in Tioga Center Tuesday while they were in their driveway.

Because the fox escaped, it cannot be tested for rabies. But because it was behaving erratically, health officials say the animal would likely test positive.

The victims were not hurt, but they will be treated for rabies.

The Tioga Center School District is taking steps to make sure students are safe, such as limiting recess. Everyone else is urged to be aware when outdoors and keep an eye out for a fox and make sure pets have current rabies vaccinations.

If you spot a fox, do not try to capture it. Instead, call the health department at (607) 687-8565 or the sheriff's office at (607) 687-1010.
