SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The more than half a billion dollar Powerball grand prize has a lot of hopefuls handing over two dollars for a shot at the money, but two Onondaga Community College math professors say you might not want to get those hopes up just yet.

There are more than 175 million potential winning Powerball number combinations. Even if you bought one million tickets, your chances of winning are still little more than half a percent.

And if you happen to have the money to play all possible combinations, you'd also better have some time on your hands.

"If you bought every ticket and you could buy one ticket every second, it would take you 5.6 years to buy 175 million different tickets. Those 175 million different tickets would weigh approximately 175 tons," said OCC Math Professor Candice Dance.

Lotto customers we talked to said they know the odds are against them, but the $2 ticket price is a small amount to pay for a shot at the jackpot.
