ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Flu season has hit Oneida County at full speed this year. In just a matter of two weeks, the amount of flu cases have quadrupled.

Two weeks ago, just under 100 cases of influenza had been reported, now there's 474. That number which exceeds the total amount of influenza cases reported last year.

Children between the ages of one and nine are being affected the most. The Department of Health says the high number is a result of people not getting the vaccine.

"We are urging people to get their flu shot. it's certainly not too late but it does take two weeks to develop immunity after you've gotten the vaccines so go out today and get one," said Ken Fanelli of the Oneida County Public Health Department.

The health department says the flu can be a very serious illness for some. They say with such an early and intense flu season this year, they say if people don't get vaccinated now, the numbers will continue to grow.
