ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- While New York City and surrounding areas make progress in recovering from Sandy, some of the deployed soldiers from the 174th Attack Wing are back in Central New York.

About 10 percent of the assigned troops arrived at Hancock Air Base Tuesday afternoon. While downstate, their tasks changed hourly. Some of them helped bring in supplies to hard to reach areas. Others assisted in patrolling the coastal areas that saw the worst damage and even looting.

They say the best part of the mission was seeing all the signs of relief.

"We actually went down one street two days ago and we were the first people to make it down that streets. They thought they had been forgotten about. So when they saw us come walking through, they hugged us and all that," Sgt. Raymond Herr.

Their mission isn't done just yet. Some of the soldiers head back down in about a week while others will be re-assigned.
