ROME, N.Y. -- A Rome man has been arrested for allegedly trying to take advantage of good Samaritans. Police say Timothy Smith would, 40, go to homes and claim his wife or girlfriend was locked out of her vehicle at a convenience store and he needed money to pay for a locksmith. Police say several people ended up giving him money.
Smith is charged with scheme to defraud in the second degree.
Anyone in the areas of Rome, Floyd or Marcy who may have been approached by Smith in August or September is asked to call State Police at (315) 736-8802.
