Fans flock to Watkins Glen

By: Bill Mich

NASCAR weekend at the Glen is much more than the action on the track. Fans start camping as early as Tuesday to make it a week long experience. And WGI has made sure fans can stay busy during the down time. Our Bill Mich has more.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- While fans flocked to the Glen for the nationwide and Sprint Cup races this weekend, WGI made sure to keep them busy until the green flag drops.

The infield is full of games, simulators and opportunities for fans to win free memorabilia.

There were also opportunities to get up close and personal with your favorite cars and pit crews as they made final preparations for the races.

And while most fans were in the infield during the day to enjoy themselves, one person in particular had detailed agenda.

“This year, my cousin’s son, he had heart surgery and he’s only got 30 percent capacity in his lungs, he has a favorite driver, Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards, and he bought himself the 1:24 die cast car and my goal is to get them autographed. I’ve already got Jeff Gordon’s autograph and I’m just waiting on Carl Edwards,” North Carolina resident Jennifer Stecker.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race gets underway at 1 p.m. Sunday
