CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- Chemung County officials are reminding residents that the state burning ban is still in effect. This comes after last week's tornadoes produced an excessive amount of tree and brush debris around the Elmira region.
County leaders are urging residents not to burn the debris, and instead place it along the side of the road for pick up.
This year's dry spring and summer have created perfect conditions for brush fires that can spread quickly. The state burning ban makes it illegal to burn trash or leaves inside barrels or open pits.
The ban usually runs between mid-March to mid-May every year, but it has been extended into October this year. Once it's over, officials said there still may be local ordinances that residents must follow before any controlled burning.
