ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca may soon be able to finish the long-awaited Cayuga Waterfront Trail.

New York's Secretary of State stopped by to check on the project Friday.

The state has given Ithaca a nearly $90,000 grant to finish the trail, a two-mile section between the Farmers Market and Stewart Park. The entire trail will run six miles from Stewart to Cass Park.

Ithaca has also received a $45,000 state grant to develop what's being called the Cayuga Lake Blueway Trail Plan, to improve water access.

Ithaca's mayor says the trails will serve to beautify the waterfront, get people outside and connect them to one another.

“We're going to see people flock to the water, take back the water. And we're going to see not just more tourism here in the city of Ithaca, we're going to see the people who live in the City of Ithaca enjoying the water and having a better quality of life," said Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick.

Ithaca's mayor says at the earliest, the city could break ground on the last section of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail in the spring.
