CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Red Cross opened up cooling stations region wide to help out with the heat, including two in Cortland.

One location was at the Office of the Aging and the other was at the Red Cross facility.

The locations not only provided a place for people to cool down during the hottest points of the day, but they also provided free water and ice. They had coloring locations for the kids and movies as well all at no cost.

"I know it was bordering close to 100 and that's pretty oppressive if you are in an area that doesn't have air conditioning. It is important to be able to support the community in any way that we can and this time, it's a cooling shelter," said Alice Anderson, Red Cross Disaster Action Team.

“It got too hot in our apartment because we live upstairs and heat rises and everything, so we decided to come here and cool off," 11-year-old Tara McMahon said.

The American Red Cross recommends not only staying cool, but also staying hydrated and if you can't come to a cooling station, go to a mall or just get some place cool when temperatures get this hot.
