ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department has welcomed eight new deputies into the ranks.

The deputies graduated from the Central New York Correctional Law Enforcement Academy Tuesday. They completed 14 weeks of basic training that gives them the specialized skills needed to manage inmates. And while they may have graduated, they still have much to learn.

"We'll be putting them now in the pods in the justice center. They'll be working with a senior officer for a period of time to make sure they're prepared for what they're going to have to face dealing with 60 inmates every day," said Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh.

Basic training includes learning law, defensive tactics, firearms, among other skills.
