NORTH CAROLINA -- Actor Andy Griffith has passed away. The television legend died this morning at his home in Dare County, North Carolina, at the age of 86.

Griffith played Andy Taylor in "The Andy Griffith Show," which ran from 1960 to 1968 on CBS. The show also launched the careers of Don Knotts and a young Ron Howard, who played Andy's son, Opie.

Griffith started his own production company in 1972 and later had another hit with "Matlock," airing from 1986 to 1995 on NBC and ABC.

Griffith received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 from President George W. Bush.
