ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- About a dozen children from Onondaga County will get to experience new adventures. They said goodbye to their parents and boarded a bus to attend the Sheriffs' Summer Camp Sunday afternoon.

It's a six week camp, and each week different children from counties across the state will spend time on Keuka Lake in Yates County. They'll take part in a number of activities including canoeing, hiking, gymnastics and swimming.

Over the course of the summer, more than 900 boys and girls will participate in fun activities, but the real goal is to teach life lessons.

Camp counselor Michelle Wojnar said, "We try to get them to try new things, to have new adventures, new opportunities. All our counselors are trained in positive energy, teaching these kids what's right, what's wrong."

"Not a lot of kids are coming from our school are coming because they're away. So, I'll get to meet new people," said camper Maya Palmer.

Deputies will put on demonstrations for the children, including boating and bike safety programs. The camp has been around for more than 30 years.
