NEW YORK STATE -- Julian Schreibman has won the Democratic primary for the 19th Congressional District. He beat out Joel Tyner to take on Representative Chris Gibson in November.

Schreibman is a federal prosecutor and attorney.

The 19th covers all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties. It also covers parts of Broome, Dutchess Montgomery and Rensselaer counties. That's a big change from Gibson's current district.

Schreibman set the stage for his general election strategy by arguing that he is more in touch with the region's values.

Schreibman said, "We need our small businesses to thrive again. That’s what we need to focus on. Our country is at a crossroads. This election will determine which path we take and we need the continued support of folks all across the district to make sure we turn the right direction.”

Schreibman also said some national political experts are calling the general election contest a toss-up.
