UTICA, N.Y -- Utica's new Multi-Modal Center is edging closer to completion this weekend. Crews began tearing down a vacant urban renewal property in the project's way on Saturday.
The Multi-Modal Center will be a bus terminal that will sit between Bleecker and Elizabeth Streets on Charlotte Street.
Bleecker Street will be closed to vehicles between Genesee and Burnett Streets while the Department of Public Works clears out the rubble. Crews will also need to close part of the street to pedestrians for asbestos safety and monitoring.
The demolition began early Saturday morning and is expected to take about one week to clean up.
"The plan is to come in here tomorrow again, tidy up what we've got to do. Starting Monday, Oneida County Herkimer Solid Waste will start sending us dumpsters. We'll fill, they'll load, go to Ava, dump, come back," said Dave Short, Department of Public Works Commissioner.
Utica's engineering department estimates the Multi-Modal Center will be done by the end of the summer.
