BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo will have a challenger in this November's election. Current Broome County Legislator Julie Lewis announced Thursday her plans to run for the State Assembly in the newly formed 123rd district.

The republican was elected to the legislature's sixth district in 2010 and made her announcement in Binghamton in front of supporters.

Lewis is a graduate of Binghamton University and is a small business owner and said visiting Albany and seeing how things were done compelled her to get in the race. She says she wants to help New York come up with a comprehensive energy plan if she's elected, but more importantly wants to focus on fiscal responsibility.

"I certainly don't want to see any more tax increases, I want to continue what the governor has started in terms of making cuts to programs and holding the line on increases. I think we need to do a lot more of that because municipalities and county governments can't afford any more unfunded mandates," Lewis said.

Lewis is a Vestal resident and is married with six children.
