CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Chemung County woman has been named the 2012 New York State Senior Citizen of the Year.

Mary Beechey of Big Flats was honored at a reception as county officials proclaimed Thursday "Mary Beechey Day in Chemung County."

Last year, Beechey was named the 2011 Chemung County Senior Citizen of the Year and was nominated for the state award. She received the award for her volunteer work with RSVP, where she has donated nearly 4,000 hours of her time.

Beechey has also volunteered for Meals on Wheels since 1987 and transcribes books for the blind, among other things.

She was one of more than 100 senior volunteers nominated from all around the state.
