Cars headed to shops for hail damage repairs

Storms across Upstate New York this week sent hail hurtling to the ground, which, in turn, is sending vehicles to body shops. Our Kat De Maria stopped by Northside Collision in Cicero Wednesday, where they've been booking lots of appointments to repair hail damage.

CICERO, N.Y. -- When hail falls on the ground, it may look interesting. But when it's done pounding your car or truck, it can be devastating. Intense storms in parts of Onondaga and Oswego counties Tuesday brought with them some serious hail and, as predicted, lots of calls to Northside Collision.

"We've already had like seven, eight cars. Quite a few phone calls," said store manager Mark Aquino.

The guys at Northside say it takes about two to three days to repair hail damage.

"In this case, we would R and I the headliner, which means remove and install the headliner, PDR the dents, paintless dent removal on the dents.”

"They usually have to disassemble the underside of the vehicle, like on a roof, take the headliner out to get access into the damaged area itself. And they use specialized tools with rubber tips on them to push the damage back out," said district manager Terry Clancy.

The work is covered by insurance even in the rare cases where existing parts can't be fixed.

"Not all panels can be repaired if there's not access to the back side of the panel. So in that case, what the insurance company will do is approve replacement of the panel," Clancy said.

Hail damage is actually pretty hard to see. So if you don't notice it right away, that's okay. The guys at Northside Collision say when you do, still go ahead and submit a claim.

"Once you put a claim in, they'll send us an assignment and we can start the process," Aquino said.

The guys at Northside say they've already booked nine appointments following Tuesday's storm. So while having a smooth, sleek car may require a little wait, it's better than seeing the aftermath of hail on your vehicle for as long as you own it.
