WATERLOO, N.Y. -- A week after a Waterloo man was killed in a hit and run, State Police have arrested a man they believe was at the wheel.

John Smith, 53, was taken into custody Tuesday. Troopers say he struck and killed 30-year-old Stephen Hilyer in the eastbound lane of State Route 5 and 20, between Brewer and Packwood roads.

Police were able to track down Smith's vehicle, which they say had recent front end damage. He's being charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
