CANADA -- The Canadian government is joining the fight to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes.

Canada's fisheries and oceans minister says that the country will spend $17.5 million over the next five years to help keep the carp from spreading. The money will be used to educate people on the dangers the fish pose and how to keep them from spreading, as well as early warning and rapid response systems if they reach the lakes.

The carp first appeared in the Mississippi River near Louisiana in the early 1990s and have made their way north since then, destroying native animals and plants.

A recent study by the Great Lakes Commission found that barriers between the Mississippi and Lake Michigan would be the most effective way to keep carp out of the lakes.
