SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. -- Residents and visitors to Broome and Tioga counties are being encouraged to explore all of the region's attractions this weekend.

Organizers announced details Thursday of the Heritage Weekend celebration. It includes special programs, lectures, tours, reenactments and discounted admission to sites.

There are about 30 sites participating in Heritage Weekend, such as the Binghamton Zoo, which is the fifth oldest zoo in the nation. In addition, all six of Broome County's historic carousels will be open.

"We encourage people from outside the area to take advantage of our history, but we also encourage people within our area to also take advantage of this because I think you'll end up with a special sense of pride of what we have here and what brings visitors here," said Doug Barton, Tioga County Director of Economic Development and Planning.
