SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A 19-year-old Syracuse man pleaded ‘not guilty’ to a murder police said he committed in March. Demetrius Hackett is accused in the shooting death of Chance Gathers, 33.

Police said Gathers was shot in the back outside a home on the 100 block of Kenmore Avenue on March 23rd. They said Gathers was a possible suspect in last summer's death of Pierre Hackett, 22, who was Demetrius' brother.

Today, Hackett's attorney asked the judge to set bail, but that request was denied.

"Demetrius has no prior criminal record whatsoever. He's graduated high school, he was going to community college. There's no reason in the world that bail shouldn't be set. And, I believe on the 30th after the judge has had an opportunity to review all the facts, and allegations with respect to this case, that he will be setting a reasonable bail," said defense attorney Michael Vavonese.

A pre-trial date for Hackett is scheduled for May 30th. In addition to a charge of second degree murder, Hackett is also charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
