TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Legislators in Tioga County have unanimously approved a $60,000 measure to build a 911 backup center. It will be the second time the backup center has moved in less than ten years.

In 2006 the center was relocated to Route 96 in Catatonk after being flooded and then in 2011, that backup facility was flooded by the combination of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

The new center will contain a two station 911 center and if for any reason the primary emergency center goes down, all dispatching operations would be able to be run from the backup location.

Officials say that this time, they are making sure flood waters will stay out of the new backup station.

"We're going to move it up to on top of Charmichael hill where our tower is. We're going to have a building built and have the backup center built there. A whole building. Everything is going to right there. So it's going to be up out of the way where our tower is so it's going to be away from flooding or any of those types of issues," said Tioga County Sheriff Gary W. Howard.

Tioga County’s primary 911 center received no flooding during the 2011 flood and experienced no outages during that time.
