UTICA, N.Y. -- Commencement marks of the end of college education but graduating students at Utica College heard one last lesson Sunday from Malaak Compton-Rock.

As this year's commencement speaker, she reminded students of the great importance of giving back after graduation.

Compton-Rock and her husband, comedian Chris Rock, work closely with after school programs in Brooklyn and children's programs in Africa.

Compton-Rock said dedication to service can overcome the initial financial pressures of a recent college graduate.

"Your degree is a blunt instrument," she said, quoting Bono. "Build something bold with it. I want to echo those words: we understand that half of the world's people live on two dollars a day, and 20 percent live on one dollar a day, it is clear that the world needs your boldness, your vision and your dedication."

Utica college had to split their undergraduate and graduate commencements this year because of larger class sizes.

The college moved the graduate ceremony from the Utica Memorial Auditorium to the Stanley Theater.
