Police still have not identified the victim of a stabbing that occurred in the middle of downtown Syracuse on Friday. The man said to be in extremely critical condition. YNN's Bill Carey says it was unusual for such a violent attack to happen when and where it did.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It was a jarring scene. Made even more startling by the time and place.

“Obviously happened in broad daylight. Right in the middle of downtown,” said Syracuse Police Sergeant Tom Connellan.

Police and other emergency crews rushed to the intersection of Salina and Fayette streets just after 1 p.m. Friday. They found the victim, unresponsive, lying on a sidewalk. He had been stabbed several times.

The attack had happened outside a Rite Aid drug store. A group of several males may have targeted the victim.

Connellan said, “From what our witnesses are telling us, that these guys got out of a, either walked up on him or got out of a car and attacked the victim.”

While the attackers fled, their victim tried to run, but was only able to get across the street before collapsing. There are still unanswered questions over what was behind the attack and who carried it out. To answer those questions, investigators need more help.

Police believe there are a number of witnesses to what happened here at Salina and Fayette. This is one of the busiest intersections in the city. The home of Centro’s major bus stop. Now they're hoping many of those witnesses will come forward.

“Anyone who saw anything. Please give us a call in CID at 442-5222,” Connellan said.

Any tip, they say, may contain the clue that resolves the case.
