CORNING, N.Y. -- The Corning city council has decided to move forward with plans to repair city streets. It's a measure residents have been calling for for years.
The council adopted a 14 year, $30 million maintenance plan. To accommodate the increased spending, the city manager said people will see a tax increase of about two percent annually.
The city manager said the plan will allow the city to increase its PQI, or pavement quality index, to an acceptable level.
"I think people feel it is a significant need. It's something that has been talked about for a number of years. The council, I think feels that a PQI rating of 52 is not satisfactory and would like to raise that to a 69 over 14 years," said Corning City Manager Mark Ryckman.
The public works department will put together a list of priority streets to repair first and work will begin in the city this summer.
