ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Rome Sports Hall of Fame honors the next generation of athletes at its annual awards ceremony. Nearly a dozen teams with children from grades three through 12 were recognized on Sunday for their sports accomplishments this past year.
The honorees included everything from local basketball league champions to the cheer squad that won the North Eastern Regional Championship. It was a neat opportunity for the athletes, and gave the Hall of Fame a chance to recognize everyone for their hard work.
"It's just great to see the coaches involved, the parents involved and the kids doing well and hope something like this will spark them to come on for bigger and better careers and maybe one day they'll be one of the inductees that's in this fine facility," said Bill Fleet, Rome Sports HOF board member.
The awards ceremony has now been around for about five years. Organizers say one of the perks is that it provides people who've never been to the Rome Sports Hall of Fame a chance to come in and look around.
