Job growth not a problem in some fields

Jobless numbers are up. In Syracuse, they're even higher than the national percentage. But as YNN's Erin Clarke tells us, every field isn't experiencing a slowdown in hiring.

UNITED STATES -- Good news for soon to be graduates. Despite a more than eight percent national unemployment rate, there are still plenty of jobs to be found in some fields.

"Accounting and finance are typically not a place where there are cuts that take place in particular, simply because you have transactional pieces to your business and you have month end close and you have financials that need to be prepared and in those cases those are absolutely necessary for companies to move forward," said Robert Half Accountemps Division Director Kimberly Ahern.

Staffing firm Accountemps released first quarter 2012 unemployment figures for some of the top positions in what they call an increasingly specialist economy. Jobs also include lawyers, human resource managers and software developers.

"People with college degrees that are 25 and older, the unemployment rate is more like 4.2 percent," said Ahern.

The problem though, tough competition. There are more applicants for those jobs than work available. So job seekers need to make themselves stand out, especially when employers are getting hundreds or thousands of submissions.

"Candidates that are looking for jobs need to have a tight resume, need to gear their resumes towards the positions they're looking for," said Ahern.

Once an interview is secure, sell yourself.

"It's a sales job getting a job so you really should come up with three top things that you want to talk about about yourself of what you bring to the table," said Ahern.

Ahern says to get to this point brush up on some new job search methods also.

"Linkedin is one of the hottest new ways to find a job. You actually can target companies that you're looking to work at," said Ahern.

The jobs are out there. Getting them is a matter of working smarter, not particularly harder.

For job seekers who think they need more help, a staffing agency may be an option. Staff at these companies act as a sort of agent, finding jobs for you and presenting you to potential clients.
