CAYUGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Members of a Cayuga County family are facing child endangerment and animal cruelty charges after a visit to their home by officers this week.
State Police say a trooper went to a home on Egypt Road Monday to help the dog warden with an investigation. While there, the officers removed the dog and arrested David Meeks, 31, and Rhode Wing, 30, for endangering the welfare of a six-month-old child.
State Police say the trooper also noticed horses he thought might be sick. They and animal rescuers returned to the home Tuesday, removed nine horses and arrested Lester Wing, 66, and Mary Wing, 53. They say they had to put one horse down because of its poor condition.
"Those animals were suffering and it was more of, I don't know if it was intentional neglect or lack of means for them to be raising those animals and hopefully they'll be cared for in the different place they were brought to," said New York State Police Investigator Edward Charles.
Meeks and the Wings have been issued tickets to appear in Conquest Town Court.
