ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals scored three goals in the third period including an empty-netter to beat the Reading Royals 4-2 in the fifth and deciding game of their best-of-five series Monday night.
Brian Stewart made 27 saves and Corey Cowick scored off a steal with less than four minutes remaining to put the Jackals ahead for good.
Cowick added an empty-netter to clinch the game and the series for the Jackals, who became just the 14th team in ECHL history to force a fifth game after losing the first two games of a playoff series.
Elmira advances to the Eastern Conference Semifinals with the victory and will host the first two games of that best-of-seven series at First Arena Friday and Saturday night.
