SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- While many families woke up and went to church this morning, one group bundled up for a sunrise mass outdoors.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Rosamond Gifford Zoo for St. Lucy's annual Sunrise Easter Service. This is the 29th year they've held the mass, and no matter what the weather, people always show.

In fact, this year temperatures were in the 30s, but St. Lucy's pastor said it was a record turnout.

Rev. Jim Matthews, the Pastor of St. Lucy's said, “Ya know it was really cold this morning, but we had the biggest crowd, every year it's bigger and this year there had to have been 800 people there. "

John Lischak, who attended this year’s mass said, “I think in a way it's a sacrifice, but that's what it should be, in a sense. It makes it more worthwhile."

Many of the people at the Sunrise Service said it's become an Easter tradition for them. Some even said they have been coming for more than two decades.
