ITHACA, N.Y. -- Just after 4 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Route 13 and Cascadilla Street, police say a car carrying four people veered off the road.

"Somehow they lost control of the vehicle, and struck a utility pole. The utility pole broke, people were ejected, and there were fatalities as a result," said Ithaca Senior Investigator Mike Gray.

The two people ejected from the car were pronounced dead at the scene, and the two survivors were flown by helicopter to hospitals in Syracuse and Pennsylvania with serious injuries. Hours later investigators remained at the crash site.

"We're trying to determine who was driving the vehicle and whether or not there were any other contributing factors," said Gray.

But Gray said putting all the pieces together has proved difficult for investigators.

"There were no apparent witnesses, that's one of our primary challenges, secondly with the fatalities and the serious injuries we're not able to fully interview the other occupants of the vehicle to determine what occurred prior to and during the accident," said Gray.

While police say speed was a factor in the accident, an exact cause is still unknown. Meanwhile the victim's names have not been released, pending notification of their families, but officials said more information should be available Monday.
