Testimony in the trial of the man accused of shooting and killing a Syracuse toddler nearly leads to a witness being led away in handcuffs. 22-year-old Saquan Evans has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of 20-month-old Rashad Walker, Junior. SYRACUSE, N.Y.--The testimony of one of the only eyewitnesses to the murder of little Rashad Walker, Junior, almost wasn't.

Within minutes of taking the stand Wednesday, Desean Maddox pleaded the fifth when he asked if he knew the accused shooter, Saquan Evans, and made it clear he wouldn't be answering any questions about November 28th, 2010.

Outside of the presence of the jury, the judge explained to Maddox he could be arrested for contempt of court...or even charged in the shooting. Again, Maddox refused and was taken to a witness room with his mother and investigators, where he later testified, "They just let me know to do the right thing."

Finally on the stand, Maddox explained how he gave Evans a ride to his mother's via 110 gang territory, at Evans'--an alleged Bricktown gang member's--request. Maddox detailed how Evans spotted the van that belonged to Rashad Walker, Senior, on Coolidge Avenue, how Evans got out and shot at the van, got back in and said "That was Chic," referring to Walker. Maddox says he then dropped Evans off and boarded a bus to college, where he was met by police.

On cross-examination, Evans' lawyer suggested Maddox named Evans as the shooter to protect himself and his friend, Carlton Morman, who the defense is claiming was the one responsible. Maddox denied Morman was there, as did Mormon himself when he took the stand. Morman, who is on probation following a fight last year at a Denny's, also denied knowing the other men involved in that incident, who are also alleged to be in the Bricktown gang.

In other testimony, tracking information from an ankle bracelet Saquan Evans was wearing put him at the scene of the shooting, and led police to a gun hidden in a tree behind his grandfather's house. But the GPS also showed Evans was not home all afternoon the day of the shooting, like Maddox said he was.

Prosecutors are expected to wrap up their case Thursday.
