WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Last year, Marcos Ambrose took home the top prize at the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. 2012's winner could be Jimmie Johnson or Tony Stewart but it won't be a Heluva Good championship.
"I was 99.9 percent sure. I guess I should have been 100% sure. You know, they just decided to take their marketing effort in motorsports and divide it up amongst a lot of tracks," said WGI President Michael Printup.
WGI's title sponsor for NASCAR weekend for the past four years has moved on leaving track officials in need of making a deal somewhere else. There was no immediate backup plan, but the Glen's president says the track now has a few options officials are taking a look at. And with only a limited number of NASCAR races a year, sponsors need to take advantage of an opening.
"There's 38 and I think that is the draw. And we're going to kick off here with the Daytona 500 in a couple weekend and I think that will be the key and probably the catalyst to get us moving," Printup said.
Annually, the title sponsor for NASCAR event can bring in anywhere from a half a million to two and half million dollars for a track. But whoever the title sponsor ends up being, fans should not worry about the weekend's overall product.
"It's racing as racing. We had the 5th best race ranked by NASCAR.com last year and hopefully we'll be one to three this year. So, we are doing a great job up there, and our corporate partners are loving it and we are just going to have some more fun this year," said Printup.
NASCAR weekend has had a title sponsor at the road course for the past 27 years, and track officials have every intention of making it 28 by the time August 9th rolls around.
