CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Country music singer Trisha Yearwood sang to students in Cortland and spoke about the importance of education and the arts.

The recording artist visited St. Mary's Elementary school Tuesday, thanks to the Grammy Foundation and Campbell's Soup Labels for Education. The elementary school won a nationwide contest after two mothers submitted the school.

Yearwood spoke about her love of music as a child and encouraged the young students to pursue their dreams.

"That music class you take, might be the thing that makes you say in the fourth grade hey this is cool, I like to do this. And you might discover a talent that you didn't know you had," Yearwood said.

Labels for Education also awarded students with 100,000 bonus points to help pay for things like music equipment and art supplies.
